When I first moved to Islamabad, I didn’t know I-11 from E-11. I just needed a room near my university. A senior pointed me to I-11 and said, “That’s where everyone lives. Just find something there.”

He was right. After living there for years and talking to dozens of students across different hostels in Islamabad, I can tell you exactly why I-11 is the default choice for students – and when it might not be the right one for you.

Why I-11 Islamabad Is Where Most Students End Up

I-11 sits right next to H-11. That’s the university sector where FAST NUCES, Bahria University, and Air University are located. The proximity is the main reason students flood into I-11 – you can literally bike to FAST in under ten minutes from most parts of the sector.

But it’s not just about distance. I-11 is residential, which means it’s quieter than sectors with heavy commercial activity. Most houses have been converted into hostels over the years, so the neighborhood has settled into a rhythm that works for students. Shopkeepers know the student crowd. Ride-hailing is available at all hours. There’s a functional Markaz with the basics.

Students who choose I-11 are usually at: FAST NUCES, Bahria University (H-11 campus), Air University, NUTECH, or IIUI.

The Location

I-11 is bordered by Kashmir Highway on one side and Park Road on the other. Kashmir Highway connects you to the rest of Islamabad quickly. That matters when your university is in I-11 but your tuition center is in G-9 or your part-time job is in Blue Area.

From I-11, you can reach:

The Good Stuff

Price. I-11 is generally more affordable than E-11 or G-11 because the infrastructure is older and less polished. You’ll find 4-seaters starting at PKR 16,000 here, whereas similar rooms in E-11 might be PKR 19,000+.

Proximity to major universities. Nothing beats being able to bike to class in under ten minutes. It saves you money on transport, time on commuting, and energy that you can put into studying or sleeping.

Student community. Because so many students live here, the ecosystem is built around you. Late-night food options, tuck shops, laundry services, ride-hailing – it all works on student hours and student budgets.

The Not-So-Good

Infrastructure. I-11 is older than E-11. The roads are narrower. Some streets get waterlogged in heavy rain. The power infrastructure isn’t as stable as newer sectors, which means generator backup matters more here.

Quality varies. Since most hostels are converted houses, quality really does depend on which street you pick. One house might be well-maintained with clean bathrooms and proper wiring. The next street over might have a landlord who hasn’t painted in ten years. Visit in person before committing.

Market. I-11 Markaz has the basics — general stores, a few food joints, pharmacies — but it’s not a destination. For serious shopping or eating out, you’ll head to E-11 or G-9.

What Living in I-11 Is Actually Like for Students

Living in I-11 means your social life revolves around the hostel and the immediate neighborhood. Most evenings you’ll find yourself at a nearby dhaba with hostel mates, or studying in your room, or playing cricket on the street if there’s space.

The area is mostly safe. Petty theft isn’t common, but it’s still a city neighborhood — lock your room, keep your laptop secure, and don’t leave valuables lying around. Most hostels in I-11 have CCTV and security guards, but not all. Check before you move in.

Noise is the biggest complaint I hear. The sector is full of students, and students make noise. Some streets are quieter than others. Visit in the evening to gauge the noise level before you decide.

How to Pick the Right Hostel in I-11 Islamabad

All hostels in I-11 are not the same. The sector is divided into I-11/1, I-11/2, I-11/3, and I-11/4. I-11/2 is closest to FAST and the universities. I-11/4 is near Kashmir Highway and can be noisy. I-11/1 is farther from the university hub but quieter.

Here’s what you should check before choosing a hostel in I-11:

1. Check the route to your university. Don’t just ask how far it is. Ride it yourself during the time of day you’d be commuting.
2. Check the bathroom. The single best indicator of hostel quality.
3. Test the WiFi during peak hours. Visit 7-10 PM and see if you can load a video.
4. Ask about generator backup. In I-11, this matters more than in E-11 or newer sectors.
5. Talk to at least two current residents. Ask them what they’d change about the place.
