Where Do NUST Students Live? On-Campus vs Off-Campus Accommodation Guide

NUST in H-12 is Pakistan’s top engineering university — and its hostel system is almost as competitive as its admissions. Every year, thousands of students apply for on-campus accommodation, and many do not get a seat. If you are heading to NUST, you need to know your options before you arrive.

The NUST Hostel Situation

NUST does have on-campus hostels in H-12. They are well-maintained, affordable (PKR 8,000 to 15,000 per month), and located close to the academic buildings. But here is the reality:

  • Seats are limited. The number of applicants far exceeds the available rooms. Many students — especially male students — do not get allocated a seat.
  • Allocation is not guaranteed. Even if you apply on time, there is a chance you will be put on a waitlist.
  • Strict rules. Curfews, guest restrictions, and fixed mess timings. Some students find this difficult, especially during exam season when they want to study at their own pace.
  • Shared WiFi. Bandwidth is shared across hundreds of users. During peak hours — exactly when you need to study — the connection slows down.

Students who do get a seat find the NUST hostels adequate for the price. But many who do not — and even some who do — end up choosing private accommodation in I-11, which is a 10-minute bike ride from the H-12 campus.

Private Accommodation Near NUST

I-11/2 is the most popular off-campus option for NUST students. It is close enough to bike to campus quickly, but far enough from the university environment to give you more freedom and better facilities. At Ibrahim Hostel, we have hosted NUST students who wanted better food, faster internet, and more flexibility than what the university hostel could offer.

One thing NUST students tell me consistently: the food at Ibrahim Hostel is better than university mess food. We cook home-style meals, menu changes daily, and breakfast and dinner are included. For engineering students who spend long hours in labs and libraries, coming back to a proper meal makes a difference.
